Rue Cler, a hidden gem in Paris

One of the great things about Paris is that because so much has been said about it in film, books, travel blogs, stories of all kinds, it is a city that is fairly easy to navigate for tourists and see all of the attractions. Although there is much to see in Paris, you have to get away from the really touristy areas to get a true feel of what Parisian life is like. So where do you find such a place. Not to worry! With my beautiful friend Céline as our guide, I welcome you to Rue Cler my friends- arguably the most charming street market in Paris.

 

Rue Cler – 7th Arrondissement (7th Arr.)

Tucked away in the 7th arrondissement right behind the Eiffel Tower is the most amazing street market in Paris. Most of the street is pedestrian only and is still lined with the original cobblestones used to build it. It is where locals go to shop and chit chat with friends.

Lined with cafes and little shops that spill out into the street, Rue Cler feels like a little village right in the middle of this busy city. Time stops and as you walk from shop to shop, your senses take over, especially the smells. You get lost in the moment admiring the beauty in simple things and a different way of life.

Parisians shop for groceries almost daily because refrigerators are small (tiny kitchens), so produce must be fresh and shopping is an social event. You get to talk with your butcher about where you plan to vacation next, while the flower lady will stop while you are picking lilies to show you pictures of her grand children. You will find the freshest of fruits, vegetables, French cheeses, seafood brought straight from the sea, flowers, all there for you to admire and take home. They even some delicious French foods that are cooked ready to take home and eat. There really is something for everyone no matter what your tastes.

It is especially a good spot to know because it is one of the few places that is open on a Sunday for you to purchase food as most grocery stores and many restaurants are closed on Sundays in Paris. Head to Rue Cler and pick up some baguettes, a bottle of wine or two, cuts of meat, cheese and desserts and head to the grassy area below the Eiffel Tower for a perfect picnic with your loved one or friends.

 

 

Directions –

Start at the top of the street, near the Ecole Militaire Metro stop, on the corner of La Motte Piquet and Rue Cler. There is a large post office with yellow signs on the corner. But before you start, don’t miss the famous gourmet food shop, Lenôtre, just outside the metro on Ave de la Motte Piquet! Head down after the post office and take in all the colors, sights, and smells.
